LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE DAY RESCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, MAY 9

May 9 is the new date scheduled for the 1995 Library Legislative Day. The
ALA Washington Office, in consultation with the ALA Committee on
Legislation, and with many of the partners and library groups participating
in this annual grassroots effort, reconsidered the original date when it
became clear that the new calendar for the House of Representatives had
been substantially changed by the 104th Congress. The House is scheduled
to be in recess for three weeks beginning at the close of business on April
7. Although the Senate will be in session on April 11, the original date
for Legislative Day, most Representatives will not be in Washington on that
date.

Further details will be forthcoming and will be sent to all state
coordinators for Library Legislative Day. The ALA Washington Office
regrets the changes in schedule this will require for library supporters,
but the sea change in congressional leadership, congressional agenda, and
congressional calendar made it necessary to make changes to best influence
events and to focus our efforts at a time when more legislators will be
available.

LIBRARY ADVOCACY TRAINING; WASHINGTON BRIEFINGS TO BE OFFERED APRIL 11

For those library groups unable to replan meetings already scheduled near
the April 11 date, the ALA Washington Office will coordinate on April 11 an
advocacy training session and briefings on the Washington political climate
and the congressional legislative agenda. A full day will be planned for
Tuesday, April 11, using ALA's Library Advocacy Now training package, plus
Washington insiders as resource persons for in-depth briefings. The day
will be geared to preparing library and citizen advocates for the May 9
Library Legislative Day and for visits to legislators in home districts
throughout the year.

Details on how to sign up for the April 11 training will be provided
shortly.
